In our response, ACCIS argues that logistic regression (LR) is a simple statistical method distinct from artificial intelligence (AI) and should not be regulated as such under the AI Act. Unlike AI, LR lacks advanced capabilities like learning, reasoning, or complex modelling and operates purely through basic, transparent mathematical techniques. Misclassifying LR as AI could create compliance burdens, hinder genuine AI development, and harm EU competitiveness. Clear legal definitions in the upcoming European Commission’s guidelines – in particular, on the concept of “basic data processing” – are needed to avoid over-regulation and ensure the AI Act focuses on systems with transformative potential and associated risk.
